The Dead Sea
The Dead Sea borders Israel, the West Bank, and Jordan. This salt lake contains coast lines reaching 400 meters below sea level representing the lowest point on dry land. Floating in this sea is made easy from the hyper-saline water. Now mountainous deserts surround this sea which decreased in size over time.
Location of the Scrolls
The scrolls are located in multiple locations as well as in a series of caves. Qumran, the main site shown at the left inset map, consists of 11 different caves where most of the scrolls were discovered. Another cave site, Murabba'at, contained scrolls from the Great Revolt. Qumran, Murabba'at, Nahal Hever, and Masada were cave locations which provided shelter for hundreds of refugees.
